The Backyard Hostel

In one hostel on the outskirts of Moshi, at the foot of Mount Kilimanjaro, we collaborated with the owner and other volunteers to complete the construction of two bungalows in mud and recycled materials.

The developer of this project is one of the few pioneers of sustainability in the region and the collaboration with him has been very inspiring because it allowed us to understand how it is possible to act sustainably even in countries where cultural recycling is not practiced.

Often sustainable construction is an economically inaccessible solution to many people. This case shows how the combination of traditional techniques and the re-use of waste materials is an economically and ethically more viable alternative than the conventional one.
